As a director, I believe that truth is the foundation of theatre. Understanding this, we acknowledge that there are many different versions of the truth. These truths tie together to create a moment in life, which is born on the stage. Imagination is born when we dip our toes into the curiosity nipping at us to better understand the other truths the surround us. As humans, we all believe ourselves to be the protagonist of our own story, when in reality, we can serve as many different functions when it comes to a person and the stories that accompany their life. This idea rings true in theatre as well, and I believe it needs more acknowledgement when working on a text. It allows us to better understand the depth of the text and isolated story line of each character, that way actors know their function in all areas of the plot, not just their own. This idea encourages that a cast works as an ensemble, and demolishes the idea of hierarchy in the realm of performance. As it has been said many times, there are not small roles, only small actors. Without research and preparation, we do a disservice to the text and truth that is given to us. Creating pieces that encourage understanding and empathy for all walks of life, while maintaining a safe space for collaborators is my ultimate goal. I want to work on pieces that challenge me to better understand other perspectives that are not consistently represented in the landscape of theatre. Being able to share the same breath as these characters, allows us to better breathe life into the text, and share stories with each other and an audience. I find extreme importance in this process, as it will not only train a performer in ways of that individual world, but it will also provide a better look at human life. The stage reflects what the world has to offer.
